Moving On worked with Radio Kerry to produce a 1.5 hour live, Saturday Supplement Show as part of a Speak Up programme, funded by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.
Working with presenter Joe McGill over a week, the group did all the research and media training necessary to produce a live radio show. They went out onto the street recording vox pop and prepared interviews with each other and guest.
There was a lot of nervous tension on the morning before the broadcast but that was quickly put aside when the women entered the studio. The women spoke about how they came to the programme and how it changed their lives. As one woman said “I just want to reach out to women who were in the same position as me this time last year. I felt lost and didn’t know what to do with my life. I really felt invisible. Moving On has shown me that I have choices and a lot to offer. I have also made so many friends and feel part of something now”.
They also interviewed employers Clare O Connor (Owner/manager Manna Organic Store) and Sinead Mc Carthy (General Manager, Brehon Hotel) about flexible working and how they are supporting women to return to work. According to Lisa O Flaherty, Employment Support Worker with Moving On, “The response from employers has been fantastic.
Employers are realising the benefits of being more flexible with their hours and offering part time work options. By doing this, they are tapping into a huge resource of skilled workers”.
